The Dive Sites of South Misool

A constellation of more than 1,500 karst islands, and underneath them walls, seamounts and caverns that have been a no-take zone since 2005.

Why the Diving Here Is Different

Misool sits in the far south of Raja Ampat and is geologically distinct from the north. The underwater topography mirrors the cliffs above it — sheer walls, deep swim-throughs and submerged pinnacles that pull in pelagic life. Nutrient-rich water off the Seram Sea feeds a reef that holds more than 550 coral species, roughly three-quarters of every species known. The reserve has been patrolled by rangers from the local community since 2005, and the fish biomass measured 250% higher after a single decade.

Seven Sites Worth the Flight

Every one of these sits inside the reserve and is reachable only by boat. Depths and conditions are what the guides plan against, not what they promise.

What lives here
A masted phinisi lying at anchor in still water below the forested cliffs of Raja Ampat

Magic Mountain

Karang Bayangan · seamount · 7-40 m

A pinnacle rising from over 200 m to within 7 of the surface. One of the few places on earth where oceanic and reef mantas use the same cleaning station. Whitetip and blacktip sharks on the crest, chevron barracuda in a silver vortex, giant trevally hunting in the blue.

Boo Windows

Boo Rocks · swim-throughs · 5-30 m

Two openings pierce the rock at about 5 m — the "windows" the site is named for, and a photographer's frame. The slope below is a kaleidoscope of Dendronephthya soft coral. Sweetlips and batfish shelter under the overhangs; wobbegongs lie flat on the sand.

Yilliet Kecil

Caverns · macro · 10-30 m

Massive caverns and swim-throughs cut clean through the island. Light falls in shafts across immense gorgonian fans, and the calmer water inside suits nudibranchs, ghost pipefish and pygmy seahorses.

Goa Farondi

Farondi Islands · cavern · 5-30 m

A cathedral-sized cave you can surface inside between dives, before dropping back down the outer walls — rich in soft coral and patrolled by Napoleon wrasse.

Nudi Rock

Fiabacet chain · reef · 20-35 m

Named for its profile above water and the nudibranchs below it. Strong current feeds the reef; schooling barracuda, tuna and the occasional eagle ray pass through.

Fiabacet

Pinnacle chain · 20-35 m

Walls, slopes and pinnacles in one site, and a high hit rate for oceanic mantas working the cleaning stations along the chain. Walking sharks in the shallows.

Wayilbatan

Channel · drift + macro · 15-30 m

Channel diving where the current does the work, and an intricate reef structure that rewards a slow eye — pygmy seahorses, ornate ghost pipefish and the endemic walking shark.

Sites are chosen each morning against the tide. A site that runs beautifully on one exchange is a different dive six hours later, which is why the guides pick on the day rather than to a fixed schedule.

What These Sites Ask of You

Misool is not a hard place to dive, but several of these sites carry real current.

Certification and experience

Advanced Open Water or equivalent with at least 50 logged dives. Magic Mountain and the Fiabacet pinnacles want drift experience more than they want the card.

Safety and standards

When the sites are best

October to April brings the calmest seas and the best visibility, with manta activity peaking December to February.

Best time to dive

What to bring

Water sits at 28-30°C, so a 3 mm suit is usually enough. A torch matters for the Farondi and Yilliet caverns.
